On Wednesday 11th October Community Energy London and members of North Kensington Community Energy (NKCE), Repowering London and Community Energy England visited the Westway Sports Centre near Latimer Road. We were joined by Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, Councillors from the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Council and staff from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) on the roof of the centre to admire the solar panels installed by NKCE.

This is NKCE’s second project where they installed a 138kWp array of solar panels in October 2022 on the roof of Westway saving over 28 tonnes of C02 each year. This was a great opportunity for Lord Callanan to see a thriving community-owned solar site which – the first he’s visited since the government’s £10 million community energy fund was announced earlier this year, and have fruitful conversations with key community energy practitioners including Afsheen Rashid, CEO of Repowering London, Syed Ahmed, Chair of Community Energy London, Nasri Ismael, Community Champion and Neil Grant, Director of NKCE. Discussions included the benefits of community energy beyond just the kilowatts of renewable energy generated and the additional support the government could provide which would help grow the sector.
