About This Event
This is the second of three Technology Spotlight events organised by Community Energy London exploring routes for community energy groups to deliver ‘bigger and bolder’ energy projects.
The first event looked at new market opportunities for solar PV. This event focuses on opportunities around the use of smart and flexible technology options and has been developed in discussion with the Renewable Energy Association.
Smarter Energy Communities will explore how a smarter, more flexible electricity system will allow the greater use of more locally-based distributed generation as well as integrating options such as energy storage, local supply, and smart tariffs. Ofgem have also stated that it will be very difficult to achieve the deep power sector decarbonisation needed to achieve future carbon targets without significantly higher levels of system flexibility (see the Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan 2021).
Community energy groups are already working on innovative smart energy projects – see Bath and West Community Energy ‘Flex Community‘ project and Energy Local as examples.
This event will:
- Provide an update on the policy framework seeking to establish smarter energy networks at the local distribution level
- Present case studies of existing community-led smart energy projects
- Explore routes for community energy groups to work with local authorities – and local distribution network operators (DNOs) – to get more smart energy projects connected to the grid
- Provide insight from businesses supporting the delivery of smart energy technologies of future trends and opportunities
- Set out the benefits to the user and system through the adoption of smart energy systems.
