Barnet Council in collaboration with Community Energy London (CEL) will run a series of four capacity-raising events in July 2024 exploring routes to support the growth of community energy action across the borough.
Community Energy London’s Potential Map has identified 574 community buildings in Barnet. Matching these sites with the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) London Solar Opportunity Map indicates that 53MW of solar PV capacity could be realised on the roofs of these buildings.
Community energy is where people come together to engage in energy-related activities, usually in response to concerns about climate change, inequality and fuel poverty. Projects are designed to have local benefits and are led by local people – and activities can include generating renewable energy, efficiency measures and initiatives supporting greener environmental behaviour.

About CEL
Community Energy London (CEL) is a dynamic and influential network dedicated to promoting, supporting, and advancing community-led energy projects across London. Since its inception, CEL has played a pivotal role in fostering a sustainable energy transition within the capital by empowering local communities to take control of their energy production and consumption. Our organisation collaborates with a diverse range of stakeholders, including community groups, local authorities, and industry experts, to facilitate the development of renewable energy projects, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions.
At the heart of CEL’s mission is the belief that local communities are best placed to drive meaningful and lasting change in the energy sector. By providing resources, expertise, and a platform for sharing best practices, we enable communities to implement innovative energy solutions that meet their unique needs and priorities. Our initiatives not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also deliver social and economic benefits, such as reducing energy costs, creating local jobs, and fostering social cohesion.
