Join us at City Hall on Friday 30th June for our AGM and Annual Conference.

Full Power: Scaling Up Community Energy Action in London

The past few years have seen significant growth in the number of community energy projects in London which has come about as a result of greater collaboration between community groups, London local authorities and the Mayor of London. The Mayor’s London Community Energy Fund (LCEF) has been instrumental in supporting not only the deployment of projects – but also the development and growth of groups – allowing them to expand on the types of projects they can deliver as well as develop as organisations, extending their reach to new partners, funders and supporters.

Community Energy London (CEL) launched a campaign in March 2023 to build upon the sector’s progress by setting an ambition to have 1,000 community energy projects in the capital by 2030. This would represent an approximate six fold increase in the number of projects delivered to date – but can also be viewed as around 30 projects for each of London’s 33 boroughs. Working with the Greater London Authority, CEL produced an innovative ‘Community Energy Potential Map’ for the city, identifying over 10,000 community buildings which we believe could host a community energy scheme. The solar potential alone of these buildings – which include arts and leisure buildings, schools, places of worship – is over 1GW of capacity.

CEL’s conference 2023 – Full Power: Scaling Up Community Energy Action in London – will examine:

  • What projects and business models will help accelerate the deployment of community energy in London
  • In the absence of any national government policy or support for community energy, what more can the Mayor and boroughs do to support projects
  • How can community energy scale up to rise to the challenge of delivering ‘bigger and bolder’ projects?
